Article to be used:
For this discussion, I chose to fact check the scene from minute 11:25-12:29 in the documentary. This scene takes place at the Gulf of Marine Research Institute where a scientist is discussing how overfishing has been a prominent issue historically (Abel, & Liss, Laub, & Abel, 2017). He then goes on to explain population trends of cod and how in 2008 it seemed to be stabilizing (Abel, & Liss, Laub, & Abel, 2017). This brought a question into my mind of why? Why this year compared to the rest was the cod population increasing instead of decreasing. There was a study published in 2011, that provided data on Atlantic cod population trends (Hutchings & Rangeley, 2011). It was noted that from 2004-2008 there was an increase in population by 8% (Hutchings & Rangeley, 2011). In the documentary, the scientist also noted that one of the reasons that this species is declining is because of global warming, as cod produce less offspring in warmer waters (Abel, & Liss, Laub, & Abel, 2017). With that being said, I also wanted to look into water temperatures in this region for that year and see how it compared to others. In a study that I read, it was noted that the summer of 2008 exhibited a temperature anomaly producing cooler waters which could be directly linked to an increase in cod offspring production for that year (Gulf of Maine Warming Update: Summer 2021, 2021). This would indicate a rising population trend for that year which was in line with what the documentary illustrated (Abel, & Liss, Laub, & Abel, 2017).
Additionally, I think this documentary was very informative and gave a lot of differing perspectives on the issue at hand. I felt sympathy for the fisherman who relied on cod fishing to feed their families and make a livelihood. However, I think it is hard for them to evaluate the abundance of this species because they only focus on what they catch and not so much on environmental influences such as global warming. At minute 4:30 in the documentary, a fisherman pulls up a large net filled with cod and flounder and goes on to say that the government is saying there is no fish, but he could do this all day long every year and continue to pull up the fish in large quantities (Abel, & Liss, Laub, & Abel, 2017). This man is implying that the government is lying to the fishing community. However, this would come of no benefit to the government as it hinders them as well economically speaking. Additionally, it is important to note that all animals have a limit to their population size and if the rate of catch is larger than the rate of reproduction, this species will inevitably face extinction.
