Go upstream to the source: Go “upstream” to the source of the<
claim. Most web content is not original. Get to the original source to<
understand the trustworthiness of the information. You can achieve<
this by identifying where the information originated. If an article is<
describing a scientific study, tracking down the original study may<
reveal that its significant findings weren’t accurately represented.<
Prepare: Choose a famous person or public figure who has died within the last two years. Using the NCC Library database, find an article about a significant event in this person’s life (not an article about their death, an obituary, etc.). If necessary, “go upstream” and find the most original source for the information that you are able to find. However, articles found using the database are often original sources of information. <
Report: Write a short response (1-2 paragraphs) that answers the following questions from your textbook. Who is the source of information? Why was this information created? How might you use this information in a eulogy about this public figure?<
Example: I choose Beverly Cleary, children’s book author who died in March 2021. Using the database, I find an article in Publisher’s Weekly about her 100th birthday. My journal entry would be about the source — an interview with a Publisher’s Weekly writer. I would write about how the information was created to celebrate this significant milestone. (However, I would also mention that an article is also visible about her publisher honoring her birthday, which is both a celebration and a marketing technique.) Finally, I would write about how I would use this information to introduce Ms. Cleary and her long career. <
