I have already written an outline with a majority of the contents. I just need help turning this into a paper style proposal. Since this is my original work, you ARE able to copy the words.
The statements must be written using the following guidelines:
standard 8.5″ x 11″ page size, 1″ margins on all sides
12-point, Times New Roman font or Computer Modern (LaTeX) font
Single-spaced (approximately 5 lines per inch) line spacing. Applicants should not use
line spacing options such as “exactly 12 point,” that are less than single spaced.
Include the 6 following sections:
o Background – What is the big picture question that motivates this work, and
what do we already know about the problem at hand? Use references to the
primary scientific literature (NOT random websites! Find your references on Web
of Science or on Google Scholar, and make sure they are from peer-reviewed
scientific journals). It’s often useful to think of the background as the set-up of a
logical puzzle that culminates in your research question. Remember to avoid
generalizations like “studies have shown…” – instead, talk about those specific
studies and make sure your general statements are supported with reference to the
o Research Question – a “how” or “why” question that will be addressed by this
project. This question should be directly related to big-picture concepts and
questions explained in the background section. Note that not every scientific
question starts with “how” or “why”, but we’re asking you to use this construct
here to help you think about testing multiple hypotheses.
o Hypotheses – explain at least 2 potential hypotheses you will test that are
possible answers to your research question. You may find it useful to justify each
hypothesis with reference to the published literature (e.g. explain why you might
think this is a possible answer to the question), and/or what critical predictions are
made by each hypothesis. There is usually no need to state the null hypothesis of
no difference between groups, and this should not be considered an independent
o Methods – How will you test your hypotheses? What data will be collected, and
how will it answer the question at hand? Include a plan for carrying out the
proposed activities that is well-reasoned, well-organized, and based on a sound
rationale. If it’s not already part of your background section, make sure it’s clear
what study organism(s) you will use in this research. Include specifics, like how
you will sample the relevant behaviors, and how many individuals will be
o Significance – If you were able to actually do this project, how would the results
advance knowledge and understanding in the field of Animal Behavior? To what
extent do the proposed activities suggest and explore creative, original concepts?
Does the plan incorporate a mechanism to assess success? Make sure it’s clear
how your possible results would answer your major question, and why it’s
important to do so. If things didn’t work out as you expect in this project, would
you still learn something important? (keep in mind that rejecting hypotheses is
sometimes more useful for advancing thought than is supporting them!)
o References – A list of the 5-10 references cited in your paper, formatted as
described below. All references should be primary literature or reviews published
in PEER-REVIEWED scientific journals.
The maximum length is 1000 words (two single-spaced pages), not counting up to 10
**How to format your cited references** Make sure all references are PEER-REVIEWED
The purpose of citations and references in scientific writing is to efficiently refer your
reader to your information sources. As such, it is important to use a standard format to
most easily communicate this information. Each journal uses a slightly different format,
and for consistency in this assignment we will follow the guidelines of the journal
As of issue 17(4), Behavioral Ecology follows the name-year citation style from Scientific Style
and Format: The CSE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers (7th ed.) for style.
All works included in the reference section should be referred to in the text. Citations should be
typed alphabetically on a separate sheet, double-spaced and unnumbered. They should be
referred to in the text by the name of the first author followed by ‘et al.’, followed by the year of
publication in parentheses: (Able et al. 2000) or Able et al.(2000). If there are only two authors
please list both, i.e. Able and Cabbott 2000. The order for references within parentheses in the
text should be chronological and then alphabetical. For works by the exact same author(s) in the
same year, append a lowercase a, b, c, etc. to the year of publication. If the works differ slightly
in names, provide enough surnames to distinguish the one group from the other. The reference
list should conform to the following styles:
Author AB, Author CD, Author EF. 2001a. Title of article. J Hered. 60:128-132.
Paper in a conference proceedings
Author AB, editor. 2001b. Article title. Name of conference; YYYY MMM DD-DD; location.
City, State or Country of publication: Publisher’s name. p. 137-180.
Author GH, Author IJ. 1999a. Title of book. City, State or Country of publication: Publisher’s
Chapter in a book
Author GH, Author IJ. 1999b. Title of a chapter: a subtitle. In: Able MN, Baker OP, editors.
Title of book. 2nd ed. City, State or Country of publication: Publisher’s name. p. 200-235.
