Please see Outline… Paper needs to focus on the Treaty of 1804.
Each student will write a paper using at least one primary source document (a document written during the past time period in question) related to the Americas (North, Central, or South America and/or the Caribbean) before 1865. (HINT: Preliminary research is crucial! Make sure to choose a topic with accessible, related primary source documents!)
The paper can be on any individual, group, movement, or historical development within the allotted time period and geographic locations, but it CANNOT be the subject of an assigned reading. (Please review the assigned readings for the course prior to choosing a topic. If it is the topic of an assigned reading, then that topic is off limits!) An example of a good paper topic on an individual would be Benjamin Franklin, while an example of a good paper topic on a historical development would be the California Gold Rush. While we will speak generally about the role of Benjamin Franklin, we will not have time to read his writings, and while we will discuss westward expansion, we will not read a primary source document on the California Gold Rush.
You are required to use your chosen primary source document(s) as the evidence to support an original argument, or thesis statement. Papers will be graded using the “paper grading sheet” provided on page 3.
• The paper should be formatted as follows: 4-6 pages, double-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman font with standard 1-inch margins. (This means at least 4 FULL pages of writing!)
• The paper must have a main argument, or thesis statement, supported by your interpretation of your chosen primary source document(s).
• The thesis statement must be underlined.
• The paper must have introduction and conclusion paragraphs, along with body paragraphs organized by topic.
• Citations must be in the form of footnotes or endnotes—parenthetical citations will be penalized (see below).
Citations must be formatted using Chicago Citation Style. For examples of Chicago Citation Style, see the “Chicago Citation Style Guide” pdf posted in Canvas.
While not required, students may use secondary sources (books/articles written by modern-day scholars) to help establish the historical context and other necessary details. However, these secondary sources must be scholarly in nature, i.e. come from either scholarly, peer-reviewed academic journals or books published by a university press. While historical scholarship is favored, students may also use scholarship from other disciplines on their chosen topic.
Do NOT use block quotes! This is a very short paper which requires you to be very efficient in your writing, and therefore you do not have the space for extensive direct quotes. (HINT: Direct quotes should not exceed two lines, and you must cite your sources for both direct quotes and paraphrasing. See “Common Writing Mistakes” posted in Canvas.)
o The abstract is a short (200-300 word) summation of the paper. It should include the name, time period, and location of the paper topic, as well as some key points you intend to cover in your paper. The abstract should also explain why you chose this particular topic; why you feel it is important to study that topic; and how it relates to larger course themes/concepts.
o You must also include the full citation of at least one chosen primary source document related to your chosen topic. The citation must use Chicago Style Citation format, see similarly titled pdf posted in the “How to Write the Primary Source Paper” module on Canvas. (HINT: For help finding primary source documents, see the list of documents included in the “Additional Primary Sources” module in Canvas.)
o The PSP Outline is a formal outline that uses bullet points to convey the content and progression of the future Primary Source Paper (at least 2 pages, 12pt Times New Roman, standard 1-inch margins).
o It should include key contextual material about your chosen topic, a preliminary thesis statement, and your plan for the progression/method of analysis within the future Primary Source Paper.
o It should also include how you plan to utilize your chosen primary source document(s) and any other secondary source material via footnote citations
