Having read Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the previous module, it is clear to us that there is a victim (King Hamlet), a villain (Claudius), and an avenger (Hamlet). Hamlet has vowed to avenge his father’s death, but why does he delay in carrying out this revenge? Revenge is something we all, deep down, understand and respond to imaginatively, even if (as individuals) we would not subscribe to personal vendetta. Hamlet assumes the responsibility early on and spends much time trying to lend credence to the allegation (like meeting the apparition or organizing the play within the play (The Murder of Gonzago etc). This process involves a great deal of excitement and violence. The puzzle here is why Hamlet just does not go ahead a carry out the revenge. Also, what do we make of the encounter between Hamlet and the Grave Diggers in scene I of Act 5? What is the dramatic irony in this scene and what is the key turning point in Hamlet’s mind in this encounter?
