The Book Review
sources – any amount
The aim of this assessment is to review a (non-fiction) book relevant to the study of conflict resolution.
Please choose a book from the list on the next page.
The review itself should:
• Identify the main ideas/arguments – not everything, but the main ones the book puts forward [e.g. ‘this book argues that most post-conflict peacebuilding programmes fail to achieve their goals …’]
• Focus on analysis [i.e. do NOT simply describe the book’s contents]
• Situate the book within the context of the conflict resolution debates/ literature with which it engages [e.g. does it agree or disagree with established theories?]
• Identify the book’s strengths and weaknesses [there may be both!]
• Give concrete evidence from the book itself to back up arguments [e.g. examples of particular conflicts the author uses to support his/her contentions]
• Use appropriate referencing where necessary [to the book itself, or other sources if you feel they are relevant]
• Offer your own opinion [but without using the first person]
